La Universidad Duke de Durham en Carolina del Norte, Estados Unidos, ha confirmado que las cenizas de carbón de la Central Termoeléctrica de Punta Catalina son tóxicas mediante un estudio.

Dicen que el Arsénico, el Selenio, el Molibdeno y el Talio en las cenizas de Punta Catalina “son significativamente más alto que los del suelo común de Carolina del Norte”, que probablemente estén más contaminados que el suelo común de la República Dominicana.
Aclararon que las sustancias mencionadas en el estudio son casi todas tóxicas, y por tanto, su inhalación y/o ingestión causan daños de moderados a severos, incluso la muerte, en el organismo humano.
Explicaron que el análisis químico atribuye al hecho de que las cenizas de Punta Catalina estén mezcladas con residuos de fondo de caldera, de que éstas presenten una concentración relativamente menor de metales, excepto Calcio y Boro, en comparación con las cenizas volantes de EUA provenientes de carbón de las minas de la Cuenca de los Apalaches.
