Orlando Jorge Mera, ministro de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, anunció que Juanita, Pepe y Lupita, los tres manatíes de la especie antillano (Trichechus manatus) que llevan varios años en el Acuario Nacional, están preparados para ser reintroducidos a su hábitat natural, acción que se llevará a cabo el próximo domingo.
Este proyecto bautizado por el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente como “Operación Pronto en Casa”, permitirá que estos tres animales puedan tener mejores condiciones de vida, al ser instalados en la ensenada artificial ubicada en Bayahíbe, provincia La Romana.
Esta ha sido una de las decisiones más importantes tomadas por Jorge Mera desde el inicio de su gestión, ya que es la primera vez en la historia del país que tres mamíferos marinos son retornados al mar con el fin de preservar la especie después de haber sido rehabilitados en el Acuario Nacional.
“A pesar del cariño que existe con los manatíes, es hora de regresarlos a casa. Lo haremos cumpliendo con cada paso crítico que implique trasladarlos sanos y salvos, y así contribuir con su bienestar, la necesaria reproducción de estos animales y el saneamiento de la fauna marina de la República Dominicana”, indicó Jorge Mera.
La especie de estos mamíferos acuáticos está declarada en peligro crítico de extinción, en Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), por el estado vulnerable en que se encuentran, debido a las colisiones con embarcaciones, la captura ilegal e incidental y la destrucción y contaminación de su hábitat.
La vuelta al mar de estos manatíes marcará un hito nunca antes visto en el país y ha sido posible gracias al trabajo que ha encomendado Orlando Jorge Mera, en el viceministerio de Recursos Costeros y Marinos liderado por José Ramón Reyes, quien ha coordinado la liberación con técnicos de la institución, el Acuario Nacional y la Fundación Dominicana de Estudios Marinos (Fundemar).
En la reintroducción a su hábitat natural Juanita, Pepe y Lupita estarán rodeados por un cerco colocado en el mar con 600 metros cuadrados de superficie y alrededor de tres metros de profundidad, serán monitoreados las 24 horas del día, por técnicos y veterinarios hasta que aprendan nueva vez a vivir sin depender de los humanos.
Este proceso de adaptación para ser reintroducidos al mar ha conllevado un cambio en la forma de darles de comer, que ha pasado de ser de la superficie al fondo de las piscinas en que se encontraban en el Acuario Nacional, con diversas herramientas que les permiten sumergirse hasta lo hondo.
Además, como parte de la adaptación los veterinarios y técnicos del Acuario le suministran los alimentos sin hablarles o darles cariño, como acostumbraban para desacostumbrarlos al apego con los humanos.
A esto se le suma diversas evaluaciones médicas que se les han realizado las cuales han incluido coprológicos, exámenes de sangre, ecografías, electrocardiogramas, chequeos dermatológicos, entre otras pruebas.
Además, esta iniciativa será posible gracias a la colaboración del Banco de Reservas, Fundación Propagas, Santroni, Grupo Inicia, Sur Futuro, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana, AM resorts, Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club, Mercasid, Fundación Brugal, Central Romana, Dolfhin Explorer, Escuba Caribe y Dressel Divers empresas que de una u otra forma han aportado para las labores de adaptación de los manatíes y el retorno al mar.
