SANTO DOMINGO.- El Instituto Nacional de Recursos Hidráulicos (INDRHI) iniciará una investigación sobre el impacto del sargazo en las zonas costeras de Bávaro y Punta Cana, en la provincia La Altagracia, con la que procurará identificar “la temporada del sargazo” y los lugares de alta concentración, información que permitirá el diseño de barreras y la distribución de equipos de recolección antes de que llegue a las playas. También estudiará cómo impacta el sargazo la calidad del agua y del suelo.
La investigación se levantará usando tecnologías emergentes y herramientas de ciencia de datos. De esa manera, se avanzará en el conocimiento sobre la problemática del sargazo en República Dominicana, contribuyendo a la salud del ambiente y a la sostenibilidad del turismo.
Los detalles del estudio, que se denomina “Distribución espacio – temporal del sargazo y el impacto en la calidad del agua y del suelo en la zona costera Bávaro – Punta Cana”, fueron presentados en el seminario “Ecología Costera en Latinoamérica y el Caribe”, por Juan Chalas, coordinador del Centro para la Gestión Sostenible de los Recursos Hídricos en los Estados Insulares del Caribe (CEHICA), dependencia del INDRHI.
En la actividad, organizada por el Programa Hidrológico Intergubernamental de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (PHI-UNESCO), analizaron los retos que presentan los ecosistemas y las formas de abordarlos con enfoques eco-hidrológicos. También mostraron lugares en los que se aplican con éxito esos procesos en la gestión de los ecosistemas costeros.
En cuanto a la identificación de la “temporada del sargazo”, Chalas precisó que el estudio abarcará su variación espacial y temporal utilizando la teledetección y el monitoreo in situ en la referida zona marino-costera, lo que permitirá, de manera similar a como se hace en la temporada de huracanes, emitir alertas para tomar medidas preventivas.
Sobre el impacto en la calidad de las aguas y el suelo, dijo que lo determinarán mediante analíticas de laboratorio y que los resultados obtenidos permitirán elaborar planes de seguridad para turistas y usuarios de las playas, en caso de que fuese necesario.
La investigación, que se extenderá durante 24 meses, integrará tecnologías emergentes de captura de datos mediante teledetección, Sistema de Información Geográfica, sensores móviles, teléfonos y aplicaciones inteligentes, además de usar herramientas de análisis espacial, geo-estadística y ciencias de datos.
También usarán imágenes satelitales sentinel gestionadas por la Agencia Espacial Europea y otras de alta resolución de Copernicus, el programa de observación de la Tierra de la Unión Europea.
El estudio se realizará con una inversión de US$207,000.00 de los cuales US$155,000.00 será un aporte del Fondo Nacional de Innovación y Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico del Ministerio de Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnología (MESCyT- FONDOCyT) y una contrapartida del INDRHI de US$52,000.00.
El sargazo pelágico es un alga marina color rojo pardo que vive la mayor parte de su ciclo de vida flotando en la superficie del océano Atlántico Norte. Históricamente, la distribución del sargazo, compuesto de las especies Sargassum natans y Sargassum fluitans se ha centrado en el Mar de los Sargazos.
Se reproduce y crece mientras se desplaza con las corrientes y flota en la columna de agua hasta que llega a la costa donde, generalmente, sale con el movimiento del agua hacia a la arena. Luego se seca, se descompone o simplemente vuelve al agua y continúa flotando.
