Comienzan a aplicar la vacuna de Pfizer contra el coronavirus en Estados Unidos

Cuando les indicaron a los estados cuántas les correspondían en la primera ronda a principios de mes, las cifras se basaron en las 6,4 millones de dosis que estaban listas para distribuirse en ese momento, dijo Perna. Ya que la vacuna de Pfizer requiere de dos dosis, el gobierno se quedará con la segunda para asegurar que llegue a la gente.

Otras 500.000 dosis estarán en reserva para emergencias, agregó Perna.

La cantidad enviada a los estados se basará en la población de personas de 18 años y más, señalaron funcionarios federales. Aunque todavía no indican la cantidad exacta, algunos estados han compartido su asignación inicial.

Para finales de diciembre, los funcionarios federales esperan tener suficientes vacunas para que 20 millones de personas reciban la primera dosis, lo que significa que tendrán aproximadamente 40 millones de inyecciones disponibles. Eso es considerando la vacuna de Moderna, que también requiere de dos dosis y todavía tiene que pasar por los obstáculos regulatorios.

Las autoridades esperan poder vacunar a otras 30 millones de personas en enero y 50 millones más en febrero.

“Conforme tengamos más experiencia en el control de calidad de la producción, tendremos más confianza, claro, al nivel de reserva de suministros que retengamos para la segunda administración de dosis”, dijo a la prensa el secretario de Salud y Servicios Humanos, Alex Azar. “Pero no distribuiremos la vacuna sabiendo que el refuerzo no estará disponible, ya sea de las reservas suministradas por nosotros, o de la continua, esperada, pronosticada producción”.

Aunque las inyecciones de Pfizer acaban de ser aprobadas por parte de los reguladores, los envíos pueden comenzar de inmediato porque la manufactura y almacenamiento de las dosis ya se llevaba a cabo. Existía la posibilidad de acelerar la entrega si las vacunas demostraban ser seguras y eficientes.
